Tie-in and spin-off games often suffer from negative press, but ultimately their quality is dependent on whether or not the developers care. Bethesda, however, didn't have much of an excuse not to give their spin-offs love - and so, we have Fallout Shelter, an iOS and Android offering from the studio which brought you the newer generations of Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.
With an art style that's faithful to that of Vault-Tec's ever-plucky mascot, Vault Boy, Fallout Shelter has you staring at a cross-section of an underground vault, attracting dwellers, building and improving facilities for them, and fending off attacks from mutated wildlife, raiders and roaming abominations. It certainly feels like the post-apocalyptic wasteland experience, and the responsibility of Overseer does bear down on your shoulders.
As of writing, I've run out of content in the game - not much has changed for a while. It blows through its content quite quickly, and has difficulty staying fresh. But it's certainly something which could help pass the time.
Alun's Timesink Rating: 2. Good to bring out when you've got nothing else to do on the train, but it probably won't last you a very long time.
Fallout Shelter can be found on the iOS Appstore and Google Play.
